As of July 1st, 2008, the interest rate for variable rate Stafford loans is 3.625%.This presents an opportunity for some students to lock
in a rate of 3.625% by consolidating their variable rate Stafford loans.
Stafford loans disbursed prior to July 1st, 2006 have a variable interest rate, unless they have been consolidated. Thus, the rate
decrease that occurred on July 1st, 2008 provides an opportunity to consolidate variable rate Stafford loans and fix the interest rate at
3.625% for the life of the loan.
